It has been two years since the world first reeled from news of COVID-19 and its devastating effects on global public health, economy, and social interactions. In that time, several unprecedented successes have been recorded that have culminated in the development of effective vaccines against the newest Coronavirus; but that is about the extent of the good news. In an ironic twist, there is widespread distrust and suspicion at the speed with which the COVID-19 vaccines are developed.

Global bodies are now faced with anti-vaxxer campaigns, vaccine hesitancy, inequity/inequality in vaccine distribution, and low supply compared to global need. Producing the vaccines is not cheap, and many countries of the world, Nigeria inclusive, do not have the economic resources to procure enough for their populations. It is why COVAX (COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access) was formed. COVAX is a global initiative aimed at equitable access to Covid-19 vaccines, and it is being directed by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, WHO, and Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI).

Worldwide, COVID-19 is still spreading and claiming lives daily. Formerly thought to be a respiratory disease, COVID-19 is now recogniSed as a multi-systemic illness that attacks the gastrointestinal system, the cardiovascular system, the neurological system, the immune system, and the cardiovascular system. Globally, there have been about 245 million reported cases and up to five million deaths across 200 countries, with more than 300,000 new cases reported daily.

Nigeria has recorded more than 200,000 confirmed cases, while more than 2,500 Nigerians have lost their lives to the disease. It is worthy of note that most of the fatalities are older people, usually with pre-existing conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, etc.

Most people infected with COVID-19 will experience mild to moderate symptoms, some of which respond well to home remedies and healthy meals, while the patient stays reasonably isolated. These usually recover within one week of supportive treatment. However, some cases become severe, leading to progressive respiratory failure due to alveolar damage, among other cascades of multisystemic inflammatory processes. Hospitalization and invasive medical procedures become necessary, and while some recover from this, many cases, unfortunately, lead to death.

Survivors of Covid-19, whether of the mild, moderate or severe cases, continue to suffer from an entity known as Long COVID. A growing number of recent studies demonstrate that specific symptoms persist to varying degrees in Covid-19 survivors long after they test negative to the virus. These persisting symptoms continue to reduce the quality of life and affect the typical day-to-day functioning of the affected individuals. In Long COVID, the most pervasive symptoms among survivors include fatigue, shortness of breath, headaches, joint pain and chest pain.

Additionally, some people experience impaired concentration and sleeping difficulties. In Nigeria, it is difficult to precisely pinpoint the specific factors that make one Covid-19 survivor more susceptible to Long COVID than the other. Still, there have been enough cases to raise a concern about this new entity.

The mayr approach at mart-life detox clinic

The goal of the post-Covid programme at Mart-Life Detox Clinic is to strengthen and rejuvenate health previously battered by the Coronavirus. The management recognises the mechanism of the immune system as reported by several authors.

Mechanism of immune systems in the human body against COVID-19 was reviewed by Mohammad and his team from the University of South Asia in a review published in the Journal and Infection and Public Health and concluded that because there is no registered medicine or vaccine against COVID-19, the immune system is the best defense because it supports the body’s natural ability to defend against pathogens (e.g., viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoan, and worms, and resists infections. It has been reported by several studies that if the immune system is functioning normally, infections such as COVID-19 go unnoticed. The three types of immunity are innate immunity (rapid response), adaptive immunity (slow response), and passive immunity.

Passive immunity has two types: natural immunity, received from the maternal side, and artificial immunity, received from medicine. Skin and inflammatory responses begin when the body is affected. However, when the body encounters germs or viruses for the first time, the immune system cannot work properly, and illness can occur. This scenario is what has occurred in the case of COVID-19. (“Immune response in COVID-19: A review”) Also, another report by Kathrine Holder and her team reported that based on new and compelling evidence, we propose that mitochondrial fission is inhibited while fusion is promoted, causing mitochondrial elongation, and providing a receptive intracellular environment for viral replication in infected cells.

It is, therefore, essential that the body defence system must be in the state of constant alert and preparedness to be able to fight against COVID-19 or prevent continuous damage from residual COVID-19. The virus unlocks a cascade of inflammatory responses that continue to challenge the immune system and cause changes in everyday functioning that the survivor had enjoyed pre- COVID-19.

After a thorough review, bioenergetic scanning, and analysis by the medical team, a treatment plan to strengthen the immune system, reduce inflammation, promote cell regeneration, and relieve the digestive system is carefully formulated. Based on bioenergetic testing, a customised Mayr diet plan is determined for everyone to support rejuvenation and health recovery, being mindful of intolerances and sensitivities. Use is also made of appropriate infusion therapies to help support the immune system and set the survivor firmly on the path to full recovery.
